The Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 provide more specific guidance on recommended illumination levels and requirements. Regulation 8 of these Regulations states that employers must ensure that:

• The lighting is appropriate for the specific tasks carried out
• The lighting is free from glare and flicker
• The lighting is maintained in good working order

• The layout of the workplace
